Kris Lee just completed a new commission with the theme “Sufi Light.” The large mixed media, 4’x6’, piece took 2 months to complete. The artwork was based on Sufi related imagery and poetry (Rumi, Hafiz). Arabic, and Farsi script were included in the artwork.

The central figure of this piece was a whirling Sufi dervish. To quote the gentleman that consigned the art, “He is lost in his ibadat (prayers), where he has no concept of his identity. He is all and all is him.”

Media used included: polymer clay, rice paper, Arches paper, acrylic, mirror, glass tile, 18 KT gold leaf, fabric, and hand-blown glass fragments. Freshwater pearls were sewn on the canvas, as well as numerous glass seed beads. The word “Sufi” means wool, so the artist included raw wool that was carded, dyed, spun, and felted by hand for the piece.

The English translation of the lamp-shaped Arabic script (*credit Sam Mugraby/Photos8.com) is “Light Upon Light,” from a verse in the Qur’an and the Farsi script on the left side of the piece is the same phrase repeated as a prayer. The winged heart was included because it is the universal symbol for Sufi. The piece lit in the dark also represents “oneness,” and transforms into a celestial spiral, encompassing all.

WildSide Studio/Gallery archive photos are now posted on Facebook! The studio/gallery was a special place, located at 518 Main in a historic landmark in the small mountain town of Frisco, CO for several years. Kris Lee owned the WildSide Studio/Gallery, where she had a working art studio that was open to the public. During that time, she also represented over 80 artists, many from Colorado. Photos from some of the numerous workshops, classes, exhibitions, and special events can be found in an album on Facebook. If you have any photos that have been taken at Wildside Studio Gallery over the years that you would like to share, please send them to Kris and they will be added to the archive. Check out the album for memories of fun times and spectacular artwork.

Kris Lee just finished a large commission for a collector in San Francisco. The new piece, “Tree of Life,” was 4’ x 6’ work on canvas, backlit with LEDs. The piece was inspired by an Iranian rug owned by the collector and featured some designs found in it. Materials used in the artwork include: leaf skeletons, polymer clay, and ceramic tiles, all coated in liquid copper.

Thank you to Stephanie Sadler, owner of the Teal Gallery in Breckenridge, CO for coordinating this commission. Please read more about it in the Teal Gallery blog! | Teal Art Gallery

Also…two additional new pieces by WildSide Studio have gone display this month. “Ignition,” a 40”x45” graffiti-inspired, mixed media work on canvas is now on exhibit at Ember Restaurant, in Breckenridge. Ember is a terrific new restaurant and bar owned by Scott Boshaw with a globally influenced menu. Post-modern, contemporary artwork there is provided by Teal Gallery. | Ember Restaurant

The other new piece, “Confidante,” has just gone on display at Teal Gallery, in Breckenridge. Materials used in the work on canvas include hand-embossed copper, barbed wire coated in liquid copper, broken china, and a collaged charcoal drawing. The artwork explores the theme of the decision to confide in others, the dangers, and possible consequences of exposing vulnerabilities.

All the beautiful hand-blown glass used in Kris Lee’s work is furnished by glassblower John Hudnut of the Gatherhouse, in Frisco, Colorado. | Gatherhouse
